McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) is located 12 miles (19 km) south of downtown Knoxville and is the premier air facility in East Tennessee. The facility is about 30 minutes away by car to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Airport handles commercial airline service, air cargo operations, and military and general aviation daily. The impact of East Tennessee's McGhee Tyson Airport on the local economy is estimated at $1 billion annually.

In 1961, with the Tennessee Air National Guard financing, runway 5L was extended to 9,000 feet (2,700 m).

In 1990 runway 5R/23L was rebuilt to 9,000 feet. In 2000, the passenger terminal's improvements were finished at $70 million.

In 2002 an aircraft maintenance facility was built for Northwest Airlines.

The now-defunct ExpressJet Airlines built a heavy-maintenance hangar near the air cargo facilities.

In 2009 a new food court was completed, featuring Starbucks, Quiznos, Cinnabon, and Uno Express Pizza.
